Introducing New Apps for Timeline

New timeline apps are now available from Foodspotting, Foodily, Ticketmaster, Pinterest, Rotten Tomatoes, Pose, Kobo, Gogobot, TripAdvisor, and others.  You can now enhance your timeline with apps that help you tell your story, whether you love to cook, eat, travel, run, or review movies.

Apps bring your timeline to life
Once you've added an app, you can begin updating your timeline with your activities as they happen. For example, if you love design, shopping or fashion, you can add the Pinterest or Pose apps to make your favorite items... part of your timeline.
You and your friends can start adding apps to your timeline today to discover new recipes, places to go, events to attend, and more.

If you love to cook, you can add the Foodily app to your timeline and share your latest dishes. If your friends have added the Foodily app, you can discover new recipes with each other, as you'll see their updates in the ticker and their timeline, and possibly News Feed.

If you're a traveler, you can add the Gogobot and TripAdvisor apps to bring a virtual passport to your timeline, and show your friends where you've been and share tips about your favorite spots from around the world.

Soon, there will be apps for all types of interests, as more apps will launch over time. Whether you love snowboarding, gardening, hiking, or knitting, or something else, there will be an app for you.

How to add apps to your timeline
Timeline apps are for the activities you want to share with friends. You choose when to add an app, and you decide who can see it. After you've added an app, you can always remove posts directly from timeline, and you can also edit your settings from your personal Activity Log.
You and your friends can start adding apps to your timeline today to discover new recipes, places to go, events to attend, and more.

The Dark Knight Rises' trailer breaks iTunes download record: 12.5 million in 24 hours

dark knight rises_640

Batman, he's a popular fellow, isn't he? Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman movies for the 21st century is about to wrap up next summer with The Dark Knight Rises, whose latest video teaser managed to tally up 12.5 million downloads from Apple's iTunes trailer site and iOS app in its first 24 hours of being there. That's a new record for the entertainment distribution service by a clear two million, but is still only part of the overall story. A quick browse through YouTube shows various uploads of the DKR trailer with millions of views attached to them. With that sort of rabid fan interest, Warner Bros can probably neglect to advertise this movie entirely and it'll still end up a runaway success at the box office.
The previous high mark for first-day iTunes downloads was set by the Avengers trailer in October with just over 10 million. Though Bruce Wayne can expect the lion's share of the credit for the new 12.5m benchmark, the fact that the iTunes record is being eclipsed in such rapid succession does also suggest that the iTunes trailer service is finding an even wider audience.

Sony Tablet S to get Android 4.0, but no release date yet

Sony Tablet S

Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack bycommitting itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. In a post on its official Sony forums in the UK, a staffer posted a message proclaiming that "Android 4.0 will be available for Sony Tablet." The language was a little vague, but a follow up post narrowed it down to the Sony Tablet S. Unfortunately, Sony didn't announce a time frame for release of Ice Cream Sandwich or even when it might announce a time frame, saying only that those details would "be announced in due course." We've confirmed with Sony that the update is indeed on the way and will also be available in the US.
We found Honeycomb increasingly frustrating in our review of the Sony Tablet S, especially with Sony's software additions. We'd certainly like to see the same March/April window Sony Ericsson gave to phones apply to tablets, but obviously wouldn't complain a bit if Sony could accelerate it even further.

Samsung: no ICS upgrade for Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab because of TouchWiz

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Bootloader

Samsung has just distributed the worst news of this Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade cycle: the popular Galaxy S smartphone that sold 10 million units last year and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab tablet won't be upgraded to Android 4.0. The company's argument is that they lack sufficient RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other "experience-enhancing" software. This will come as a massive blow to the great many users of the Galaxy S, who would have rightly expected the 1GHz Hummingbird processor and accompanying memory to be able to handle ICS — it's the same hardware as you'll find inside the Nexus S, and that phone is receiving Android 4.0 over the air right now.
Samsung addresses that inconsistency by again pointing to the differing software provision; the Nexus S only has to run the basic Android OS, whereas the Galaxy S has to deliver TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software, and, in some markets, mobile TV.
HTC had this exact same issue when upgrading the Desire to Gingerbread a few months back, and after some equivocation, it was forced to disable some functions of its own Android skin, Sense, in order to make the upgrade fit. So Samsung isn't alone in making .

Ubislate 7 to be India's next low-cost Android tablet, shipping in January

Ubislate 7The response to the low-cost Aakash Android tablet was apparently big enough to warrant bringing out its commercial successor: the Ubislate 7. The new tablet essentially offers a few spec bumps over its predecessor while still keeping the cost very low: around $55 US. Ubislate is taking preorders now and plans on shipping in January.
Made by DataWind, the Ubislate 7 features a 7-inch 800 x 480 resistive touchscreen, 700MHz Cortex A8 processor, 256MB or RAM, 2GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, a full USB port for connecting peripherals, and a 3200mAh battery that should be good for around three hours of battery life. The tablet will run Android 2.3 instead of 2.2, and no word on whether or not it will ever be upgradable to Honeycomb.
The tablet will also have a GPRS radio, which like the other specs may seem a little underpowered by today's standards. However, Ubislate has baked in some web acceleration technologies to help with speed and also claims that the tablet can be used as a phone in a pinch.

How To Enable Facebook’s New “Timeline” Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

Yesterday Facebook announced a host of new features in what was described by industry observers as the biggest shakeup in Facebook’s history.  Most of these changes are obviously due to the emerging and growing threat from Google Plus, and one of the features that Mark Zuckerberg introduced was the radical redesign of the profile page.  It’s called the “timeline” and it could prove to be the most controversial change of them all.
Not everyone has the timeline design yet and you may have to wait up to several weeks for it.  However, if you’re curious about how it looks on your profile and you want to try it out now, then here is how to do it.
Please note however that your new timeline page will only be viewable to those who also have the timeline design page.  Those who still have the old page design will continue to see your old page design until the timeline feature goes mainstream for everyone.

Step One – Authorise Facebook Developer To Access Your Account

The first step is to sign up as a Facebook developer. This involves enabling and authorising Facebook Developer to access your Facebook account.  Just go here and click “allow“.

Create A New App

The next step is to create a new app.  Don’t panic, you’re not actually going to create one.  On this page, in the top right hand corner are two buttons – “edit app” and “create new app“.  Click “create new app“.
This is the box that will come up next.  Simply put whatever you want into both boxes.  It doesn’t matter, as long as someone else hasn’t reserved the name.  It should also be at least 7 characters long.  As you can see, I put “coolmuoapp“which was the first thing that popped into my head.  Now click “continue“.

Clear The Captcha

Now you have to prove you’re human and not an automated bot.  Enter the captcha and hit “submit“.

Define An Action

OK, you’re almost finished.  In this final screen, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the “Open Graph” link in the top left hand corner of the page.  Click on that and you will get this :
All you have to do is choose an action in the first text field and choose an object in the second text field.  So I chose “watch” in the first text field and “movie” in the second.  Now press “get started“.
After processing that, Facebook will flip back to the Open Graph page (you may even get an error message) but you can now ignore all of that and head towards your Facebook profile.  Within a minute or two, you should receive an invitation to try out the timeline profile.  Click on that and you are in.  Here’s mine :
At the top, where I have chosen to upload a Highland cow (one of my favourite animals) is the area known as the “cover”.  This is where you can upload your own photo and reallypersonalise your page.  You can let your imagination go completely riot and choose something that reflects your personality and who you are.
On the whole, the timeline profile is an interesting development but it is a radical departure from what the profile used to be like, so I am sure there will be lots of people who will vehemently hate the design.  But I would say give it a chance.
As the name “timeline” implies, you can move the slider back over every year you have had the Facebook profile and see all your old status messages.  I found it fascinating seeing what I posted years ago and laughing at some of the bad jokes that I posted (and some of the good ones too).
Let us know in the comments if you have any problems getting the timeline page, and also let us know if you either like or hate the new design.
